still remember my very first encounter with ecoprint. It was back in 2021, when I was visiting a small village in the city where I live. I was chatting with a local home-tailor when something caught my eye — a pile of shimmering fabric scraps tossed aside near the trash. They were waiting to be thrown away. I walked closer, and in that quiet moment, my heart started to race.  I fell in love.  And the rest, as they say, is history.

I’d love to tell you how everything that followed felt beautifully full-circle (the universe truly has a sense of humor😮), but there’s something even more important I want to share. As I learned more about ecoprint, I began meeting many incredible women — local home-tailors with extraordinary skills, who often couldn’t pursue their craft because of their responsibilities at home. That was when I found the role, the heart, and the mission behind Panarima.

Panarima is a social enterprise rooted in Boyolali, Central Java, Indonesia. We combine the creative potential of this fertile land with the craftsmanship of local women to produce #youthfulecoprint creations from Boyolali. The name Panarima comes from the Javanese word panrimo, which means ā€œgratitude.ā€ It reflects our hope to extend gratitude to everyone and everything that takes part in our creative journey.

Boyolali is blessed with rich soil and abundant wild plants — the perfect companions for the art of ecoprint, which uses real leaves, wood, and flowers to create natural colors and patterns. This process reminds us to ā€œtake and give back,ā€ and that’s why Panarima plants trees and nurtures a small garden in collaboration with a local woman gardener. Through this, she not only helps our plants thrive but also receives additional income from our partnership.

As I continue walking this path, I’m constantly reminded of how every small choice can touch and transform another person’s life. And that’s what keeps me creating ecoprints — pieces that carry meaning, connection, and a little bit of heart in every fiber.

The Flow of Ecoprint

"Every piece you hold is not only handmade but heartmade."

1. The Gathering & Mordanting

The journey begins by gathering plants, each with its own story. We then prepare natural fabrics like cotton and silk in an essential mordanting bath (hot water, alum, and soda ash) to ensure the botanicals can leave their mark.

Botanical treasures are artfully placed on the fabric, then bundled and steamed for two hours. During this time, the plant's natural pigments are permanently transferred, leaving their imprint.

The most magical moment is the reveal. As the bundles are unwrapped, the unpredictable results appear—sometimes soft and faded, sometimes blooming vividly. Each piece is a unique miracle, created by nature’s artistry.
